“Remembering Our Dead”

Once again, it is that time where the Month of November calls us to remember our dead with gratitude. On November 1st the Church will celebrate the Solemnity of All Saints and November 2nd is the day we celebrate All Souls. As we have done in the past few years, on November 5th and 6th we will ‘Remember Our Dead.’ As you know we will set up a memorial for this occasion. Located at the front of the church near the altars are the names of 30 people whose funerals were held either at St. Matthew’s Worship Site (5) or St. Rose of Lime Worship Site (25). As well, we include those funerals where I have celebrated at the funeral homes this past year. Beside each name is a candle, symbolizing the “Light” that their lives were for us. These candles will remain lit for the month of November. Also the Baptismal Font and Easter Candle anchor the display, telling us that our loved ones who were baptized into the Life, Death and Resurrection of Jesus Christ, now share eternal life with God. Finally, the use of “purple” symbolizes ‘Our royalty,’ that at our baptism, we were anointed “Priest, Prophet and King”.

Near the display is a book where we are invited and encouraged to write the names of all our loved ones gone before us into eternal life. This Book of Remembrance will be remembered at all our Masses during the month of November. To conclude our Church Year, on November 24th, the Solemnity of Christ the King, we will remember all our dead at Mass, giving thanks to God for blessing us with their lives and praying that all of them now share in eternal life. One of the highest tributes that we can pay to our departed sisters and brothers is to remember them in our personal prayer and at Mass. Please continue to pray for the dead and for their families who continue to mourn their loss.

Pope Francis appoints Most Rev. Christian Riesbeck, CC as new Diocesan Bishop of Saint John

It is with great joy that the Diocese of Saint John received the official announcement earlier today that Pope Francis has appointed the Most Revered Christian Riesbeck, CC to succeed the Most Reverend Robert Harris as Bishop of Saint John. Bishop Riesbeck has been serving as the Auxiliary Bishop of Ottawa since his episcopal ordination in 2014.

Bishop Riesbeck was born in Montreal on February 7, 1970. He attended the University of Ottawa from which he obtained a Bachelor of Social Sciences (B. Soc. Sc.) in Political Science, followed by a Baccalaureate in Sacred Theology (S.T.B.) from Saint Paul University in Ottawa and a Master of Divinity (M.Div.) fro, St Augustine’s Seminary in Scarborough. He was ordained to the priesthood in Ottawa for the Companions of the Cross on October 12, 1996

After serving in pastoral ministry 9im the Archdioceses of Kingston, Ottawa and Galveston-Houston, Texas (nine years as pastor) from 1996 to 2008, Bishop Riesbeck completed additional studies in Canon Law (J.CL. – Saint Paul University) in December 2010. In January 2011, he was appointed Chancellor and later Episcopal Vicar for Canonical Concerns for the Archdioceses of Ottawa, ad a judge of the Ottawa Regional Marriage Tribunal. He also served as the Assistant General Superior of the Companions of the Cross from 2012 – 2014. Following the announcement made by Pope Francis on January 7, 2014, Bishop Riesbeck was ordained to the episcopate on March 19 as Auxiliary Bishop of Ottawa. He has held the offices of Vicar General, Vicar for the National Language Parishes, Communities and Faithful, Moderator of the Curia, and most recently, Coordinator of English Pastoral Services.

Religious Education Registration

We would like to welcome everyone back to Religious Education at Holy Spirit Parish.
Classes begin at St Matthew’s Worship Site, on September 15, 2019, with an Assembly in the Church (upstairs) at 10 AM before Mass.
Classes begin at St Rose of Lima Worship Site on September 16, 2019 at St Rose Place (formerly St Rose Rectory)  at 6:30pm
Registration is available online by clicking here.
Registration forms for St Mathew’s Worship Site will be available at the back of the church or on the first day of classes.
Registration forms for St Rose of Lima Worship Site will be available on the first day of classes.
Please remember there is no fee involved! All teachers are volunteers, and the Parish and it’s various individual groups have been most supportive in the past and we have been assured that will continue. Additionally, we hope to sponsor small fundraisers during the year in which the children can participate, increasing their awareness and support for the day to day needs of programs such as ours and the Parish’s other groups, and their involvement in our Faith Community.
While registration and attendance traditionally have seemed boosted for the grade levels which prepare for the main Sacraments of Childhood (First Reconciliation, First Communion, and Confirmation), and we have always had eager and enthusiastic groups for these special occasions in our young people’s lives, you are urged to remember that attendance every year is most important to really prepare the students for full understanding of those Sacraments, and for Faith Foundation, and while home preparation is invaluable, participation in groups and Mass will help make Faith real in their lives.
If you have any questions or would like to help out with a class please call or email
